Germany, the AfD is expected to come first in Thuringia and second in Saxony

Germany's two eastern states, Thuringia and Saxony, appear to have given strong support to the far-right Alternative for Germany party, AfD, according to polls after Sunday's vote. Preliminary data points to a win in Thuringia while second in Saxony is expected. The coalition parties in power seem to have recorded very poor results.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party ruling coalition is facing ongoing internal debate, while a weakening economy and other problems have fueled discontent among voters.

Forecasts by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, based on post-vote polls, show Alternative for Germany taking 32-33 percent of the vote in Thuringia, far more than the center-right Christian Democratic Union, Germany's main opposition party. , with about 24 percent.

In neighboring Saxony, forecasts show the CDU, the party that has led the state since German reunification in 1990, taking about 31.7 percent of the vote, followed by the AfD with 30.6-31.4 percent.

German parties have said they will not join a coalition with the AfD party to secure it power. The general secretary of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, Carsten Linnemann, said that his party will stick to its long-standing position not to cooperate with the extreme right.

The AfD is the party with the strongest influence in the former communist East Germany. On September 22, elections are held in the other German state of Brandenburg, where Chancellor Scholz's party dominates.

A little more than a year later, the national elections will follow./ VOA
