Large protests in Tel Aviv/ Israelis demand a ceasefire, block the roads

Israelis took to the streets of the country on Saturday evening to express their grief and anger after the bodies of 6 hostages were found in Gaza. They chanted "Now now" as they asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach a cease-fire agreement so that the remaining hostages in Gaza could return home alive.

The protests are marking one of the strongest calls yet for the Israeli prime minister to sign a ceasefire. Israel's largest trade union, Hisdraut, has called a general strike on Monday, further increasing pressure on the government. The strike is expected to affect key sectors of the economy, including banks, hospitals and the country's main airport. This would be the first general strike since the October 7 attack by Hamas.

Tens of thousands of Israelis were expected to participate in Saturday's protests.

Many blame Mr. Netanyahu for failing to broker a ceasefire after nearly 11 months of fighting.
Negotiations for such an agreement have dragged on for months. The Israeli military has acknowledged the difficulties in rescuing the remaining hostages and has said that the deal is the only way to make possible the return of the hostages on a large scale.

"I am crying because I feel sorry as a human being," said the protester, who identified himself as Amos, who was among thousands of protesters who had gathered outside Prime Minister Netanyahu's office in Jerusalem.

The army said the six hostages were killed shortly before Israeli forces arrived.

Polio vaccination campaign

Palestinian health authorities and the United Nations have launched an extensive polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip.

The UN-led campaign in coordination with Gaza health officials aims to vaccinate around 640,000 children in the Gaza Strip after Israel and Hamas agreed to a brief ceasefire to allow the vaccination campaign.

The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed last month that a child less than 1 year old had been partially paralyzed by the polio virus, the first such case in the territory in 25 years.

The vaccination campaign faces many challenges, from the fact that fighting continues, to destroyed roads and hospitals that have been closed as a result of the conflict.

About 90 percent of Gaza's population has been displaced, and hundreds of thousands are huddled in tents.

Last month, Israel allowed 1.3 million doses of polio vaccine, which are being stored in Deri al-Balah, into the territory. A quantity of 400 thousand doses is expected to be sent to Gaza soon./ VOA
