Putin arrives in Mongolia despite ICC arrest warrant

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Mongolia, on his first visit since issuing an arrest warrant for him last year.

He was welcomed by Mongolia's leader at a lavish ceremony in the Asian country's capital Ulaanbaatar on Tuesday.

The Russian leader is wanted by the court for the alleged illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.

A Kremlin spokesman said he was not concerned that Mr Putin would be arrested during the visit.

A small group of protesters gathered in the square on Monday afternoon, holding placards reading: "Get war criminal Putin out of here."

Another protest is planned for midday on Tuesday at Ulaanbaatar's Monument to the Politically Repressed, which commemorates those who suffered under Mongolia's decades-long Soviet-backed communist regime.

Before his visit, Ukraine had asked Mongolia to arrest Mr Putin.

"We call on the Mongolian authorities to respect the mandatory international arrest warrant and transfer Putin to the International Criminal Court in The Hague," Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said on Telegram./ CNA
