The Romanian Parliament approves the donation of an anti-aircraft

Romanian lawmakers on Wednesday passed a bill to donate an air defense system, the Patriot, to Ukraine.

Romania's Defense Ministry says the aid boosts efforts to support Kiev and strengthens Bucharest's relationship with the United States.

The bill received 245 votes in favor, 29 against and one abstention.

Romania, a member of the European Union and NATO, shares a 400-mile (649-kilometer) border with Ukraine and has often been hit by shrapnel from Russian drones since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago.

The signature of President Klaus Iohannis and an implementation decision by the government are now needed before the Patriot anti-aircraft missile can be sent to Ukraine.

The draft law brought by the Ministry of Defense of Romania states that "this will contribute to strengthening Romania's position as a provider of regional security and will deepen relations with the United States".

Romania has provided military aid to Ukraine in its war against Russia, but has refused to reveal the extent of the support, for security reasons.

It has also pledged to train Ukrainian pilots in the use of F-16 fighter jets at a regional center inaugurated in November 2023.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
