The US accuses Russia of interfering in the November elections

The United States has indicted two managers of a Russian state television station and accused the Kremlin of conducting a covert operation to interfere in November's US presidential election.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said RT, formerly known as Russia Today, and its two Moscow-based managers orchestrated "a $10 million scheme to create and distribute content to American citizens." with secret messages of the Russian government".

Garland also announced that the US Department of Justice has seized 32 Internet domains used by Russian actors as part of the suspected influence-peddling operation.

Moscow's aim was to ensure a "preferred result" in the presidential race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, he said.

The Kremlin has used RT and the online platforms it supports to target American voters with disinformation, the Department said. RT is seen as a very important part of the Kremlin's propaganda efforts.

"Today's announcement highlights the scale of the Russian government's influence-peddling operations and their reliance on advanced AI [artificial intelligence] to plant disinformation," said FBI Director Christopher Wary.

"Today's announcement shows how far foreign governments go to undermine American democratic institutions," the US State Department said in a statement.

DASH warned that "these foreign governments must also know that we will not tolerate malicious foreign actors to deliberately interfere and undermine free and fair elections."

A month ago, US Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in a speech that Russia was the main threat to US elections.

American citizens will vote on November 5 in the presidential election.

The former American president, Donald Trump, is the Republican candidate in this race, while the American vice president, Kamala Harris, is expected to be announced as the Democratic candidate.

Elections will also be held for the 435 seats of the House of Representatives and 34 of the 100 seats of the Senate./ REL
