The Pope asks that religion not be used to incite conflicts
Pope Francis

Pope Francis warned against using religion to fuel conflict. This appeal was made in the context of a statement that he signed with the great imam of Indonesia, before holding a mass in Jakarta.

The signing of the declaration at the Istiqlal mosque was one of the last key steps of Francis' three-day visit to Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world.

Religious harmony has been at the center of the pope's trip.

In the speech at the mosque, Francis said that "if we look deeper... we will discover that we are all brothers, all pilgrims, all on our way to God".

While warning against using religion to fuel conflict, he also said the environmental crisis is an existential threat to human civilization.

During the visit to Indonesia he met with the leaders of the six official religions in Indonesia.

"We must take the responsibility to seriously address the crises that threaten the future of humanity, such as wars and conflicts... and environmental crises, which are an obstacle to the growth and coexistence of peoples", said Francis.

During the pope's visit to the Istiqlal mosque, head priest Nasaruddin Umar read parts of the Koran and a blind girl read a part from the Bible.

This mosque is located in front of the cathedral in Jakarta and the two objects are connected "by the tunnel of friendship", as a symbol of religious brotherhood.

Francis visited the tunnel before meeting the chief imam.

Francis has visited several Muslim-majority countries and in 2019 he visited the United Arab Emirates and signed a document on brotherhood between peoples with the grand imam of this country.

In Indonesia, 242 million people, or 87 percent of the population, are Muslim. Meanwhile, close to 8 million, or close to 3 percent, are Catholics./ REL
