Russia said it will take retaliatory measures against US media in response to US accusations that Russian media leaders and state broadcaster Russia Today (RT) are trying to influence the November presidential election.

A day earlier, the US filed money-laundering charges against two RT employees over what officials said was a scheme to hire a US company to produce online content to influence the 2024 election.

The US also announced actions targeting RT, including editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan. US officials said Russia's goal is to create political disunity in the US and weaken American public support for aid to Ukraine, which is facing a Russian-initiated war.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said the US moves were part of a plan to drown out any dissenting voice from the media landscape and to instill fear among American voters about Russia by portraying it as a mythical external enemy.

"When the authorities take such primitive actions to influence their voters, it represents the decline of 'liberal democracies,'" the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said in a statement.

"There will be answers," she added.

Reporters Without Borders lists Russia 162nd out of 180 in terms of media freedom, while the US ranks 55th.

Since the start of the Russian occupation of Ukraine, Russia has tightened its grip on information and media, forcing many to close their offices in Russia. Moscow has also declared many journalists and activists as "foreign agents".

Many Western media outlets have left Russia since the start of the war, and almost no American journalists remain in Russia./ REL
