The Danish government is considering removing a rule that allowed asylum seekers who were denied the procedure to stay in the country for another 18 months, Schengenviza.info reports.

After receiving a negative decision on their asylum application, the foreigners were allowed to stay in Denmark for another 18 months and also obtain a residence permit. Between 2016 and 2024, this category of migrants was granted 18 residence permits in Denmark.

"It is a scheme that is expensive to administer compared to the very few residence permits that are granted in the end. And then it is about foreigners whose asylum application has been processed according to all the rules of the art, but who do not need protection. They have no right to be in Denmark", said Kaare Dybvad Bek, Minister of Emigration.

The ministry said in a press release that it will formally propose lifting the rule, with the bill first going through a hearing stage and then being voted on by parliament.

Denmark has received 900 asylum applications so far in 2024

A total of 900 asylum applications were submitted to the Danish authorities in the first five months of 2024, which is 36.2 percent of all applications submitted in 2023 (2,482). Denmark ranks 23rd in the list of countries with asylum seekers per capita in the EU.

The top visa applicants in Denmark for 2023 were Syrians, Afghans, Eritreans, Russians and Iranians. About nine percent of asylum seekers were unaccompanied minors.

On the other hand, 72 percent of immigrants, with 1343 applications, have received positive responses to their application, where 24 percent have already received a residence permit./ CNA
