Two months before the US presidential elections

With two months left before Election Day in the United States, presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are preparing for their first debate. Meanwhile, as Voice of America correspondent Scott Stearns reports, the campaign of both candidates is focused on the issue of the economy.

At the center of Republican Trump's campaign is the economy and attacks on rival Harris. Donald Trump, Republican candidate for president “She will not know about working people or middle class Americans. She doesn't give a damn about you," says Mr. Trump.

Ms. Harris' team says Republican Trump is the one who will hurt labor with corporate tax cuts.

"Strengthening the middle class will be a top priority of my presidency," says Ms. Harris.

The economy is the most important issue for voters in this election. That's a problem Ms. Harris needs to address quickly, says analyst Hank Sheinkopf.

"It needs to clarify why people are paying more for fuel, why their food has these prices and why the producers of these products are giving them less for the same money," he says.

Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance says a vote for Ms. Harris means job losses.

"Think of all the powerful interests, the bureaucracy in this country, the people who have enriched themselves by shipping your jobs to China. They love Kamala Harris. The only way to beat them and fight them is in the boxes of voting in November", he says.

On the other hand, Tim Walz says that it is the Democrats who are committed to American workers.

"Donald Trump and JD Vance have something else in mind. The only thing they know about workers is how to take advantage of them, how to not pay them. Every time they've had the chance, they've waged war on workers and their conditions. them," says Mr. Walz.

Two months before the election, the race remains tight. Most opinion polls show Ms. Harris with a slight lead over Mr. Trump nationally.

David Martinez, a voter in Michigan, supports Mr. Trump.

"He is a true American patriot. He thinks more about people than himself. In every action he tries to help someone," he says.

Georgia voter Becca Rush supports Ms. Harris.

"It's 2024, we need a new spirit and a brighter future," she says.

As they continue to campaign, candidates Trump and Harris will spend much of the next few days preparing for their first presidential debate on September 10./ Voa
