Chaos in front of German schools / Parents, "taxi" for children

Anyone who has been in Germany in the mornings before primary schools knows the chaos caused by cars before school, before school starts or after school. But if parents want to take their children as safely as possible to the door of the school, they should know that dangerous situations are created for others.

From an ADAC survey where 1000 parents were asked, it appears that the phenomenon of bringing children to school in private vehicles is very widespread. There it is established that in spring and summer 23% of parents take their children to school by car, in autumn and winter this figure is higher, 28%, and even at least three times a week. Some German municipalities have even begun to partially block the road or territory near elementary schools.

Reasons for parents who drive their children to school

Parents often mention work schedules or the need to save time, as well as bad weather, as reasons for this school drop-off service. Another reason is that the school is on the way to work, and the child is taken with them, or simply comfort for the children. Only 11% of parents who take their children to school by car cite traffic safety concerns as a reason for taking their children to school.

Last year, 27,000 children were injured in road traffic. According to the Federal Office of Statistics in Germany, children between the ages of 6 and 14 are most often involved in accidents while cycling, in the mornings and on weekdays./ DW
