The first case of bird flu in a human without exposure to infected animals is confirmed

US officials have confirmed a case of bird flu in a patient who was not exposed to animals.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this is the 14th case reported for 2024.

Previous cases in the US have been traced to exposure to infected poultry or livestock.

"The patient from Missouri marks the first case of H5 without an exposure to sick or infected animals," the CDC said in a statement.

The patient received antiviral medication against the flu and was treated at home.

According to foreign media, the case is under investigation by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

Bird flu is a viral disease that mainly affects birds and other animals. Human infections are rare. The risk assessment of bird flu for humans remains low.

So far no cases of bird flu have been reported in cattle in Missouri, but there have been outbreaks of the virus among birds./ CNA
