CIA Director Burns: We'll Have a Detailed Plan for a Gaza Ceasefire Soon

Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip have killed at least 61 people over the past 48 hours, according to local Palestinian authorities, as health workers wrap up the second phase of an emergency polio vaccination campaign aimed at preventing the widespread spread of the virus.

11 months after the start of the war, a series of diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement to end the conflict and enable the release of the hostages have failed.

The warring parties have blamed each other for the failure of ceasefire negotiations, which include the United States, Egypt and Qatar.

The director of the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), William Burns, who is leading the negotiations from the American side, said during a meeting in London that a more detailed plan for a cease-fire in Gaza will be presented in the coming days.

"We will unveil a more detailed proposal over the next few days and then we will see ," he said. According to him, this is a matter of political will. Mr Burns said he hoped leaders from both parties understood it was time "to make tough choices and compromises".

The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, which Israeli authorities said left 1,200 people dead, mostly civilians. Hamas is believed to still be holding more than 100 hostages. Israeli authorities estimate that about a third have died.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its toll. The ministry reports that more than 94,000 people have been injured since the beginning of the war./ VOA
