New government in Germany/ Merz announces names chosen for German cabinet

CDU chairman and future German chancellor Friedrich Merz has officially announced which members of his party will hold ministerial posts. The names were presented at the party's headquarters in Berlin.

At the Foreign Ministry, Johann Wadephul, an experienced defense and foreign policy expert, will lead Germany's diplomatic efforts at a time of rising global tensions.

In a major economic move, Katherina Reiche, a former energy executive and former lawmaker, will head the Ministry of Economics and Energy, overseeing Germany's reindustrialization plans.

Patrick Schnieder, a veteran transport policymaker, takes over the Transport Ministry, while Karin Prien, who previously headed education policy in the northern state of Schlesweg-Holstein, will head the Education Ministry.

 Nina Warken, a legal specialist for the Bundestag, has been appointed to head the Ministry of Health.

Merz has also created a new Ministry for Digitalization, choosing physicist and technology executive Karsten Wildberger to push long-overdue digital reforms in the government.

Cultural and media affairs will be headed by Wolfram Weimer, a well-known journalist and publisher. Christiane Schenderlein, a member of the Bundestag with experience in cultural policy, becomes Minister of State for Sport and Voluntary Engagement.

Regarding European affairs, Merz appointed strong voices from his Union, Serap Güler joins the Foreign Ministry as state minister for international cooperation, while Gunther Krichbaum, a veteran in EU politics, takes on the role of state minister for European affairs./CNA
