Cracks appear in houses and roads / Concern begins for residents in Crete

Cracks that have appeared over the past day or so in streets and houses southwest of Heraklion, Crete, have raised concerns among residents and prompted authorities to take swift action.

The cracks, observed along a stretch of about 150 meters in the Voutes area and affecting roads and approximately ten houses, are believed to have been caused by land subsidence.

Local authorities have begun initial inspections, with more extensive checks planned for Monday by the Earthquake Risk Assessment Committee, chaired by Professor Efthimios Lekkas.

Today, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection announced that a full investigation will be conducted into the causes of the cracks and whether the damage could spread to surrounding areas.

An emergency response plan is also being prepared, while ministry officials confirmed that the possibility of declaring a state of emergency is being considered.

The Mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokairinos, accompanied by associates, visited the affected area this Sunday, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

"The immediate priority is to conduct a geological and geotechnical assessment without delay. Declaring a state of emergency would expedite the necessary procedures," the mayor said. /CNA
