Rubio: Peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine must be reached soon

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine should be reached soon.

"The deal needs to be done soon. We can't continue to devote time and resources to this effort if it's not going to bear fruit," Rubio told NBC.

At the same time, he noted that the Donald Trump administration will assess whether it is worth continuing to play a role as a mediator between the two sides.

"The next week will be really important, we have to decide whether this is an effort that we don't want to continue to be involved in, or whether it's time to focus on other issues," he stressed, among other things.

In addition, Rubio said that Washington has so far avoided imposing sanctions on Russia, wanting to give space to diplomacy. However, he warned that Trump has a way of dealing with any party that opposes a peace agreement.

"If that doesn't happen, if it doesn't bear fruit (the agreement), then there are opportunities for those we hold responsible," the US Secretary of State noted.

"We prefer not to reach this stage yet, because we believe that this closes the door to diplomacy," he added.

The US Secretary of State's statements come a day after Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Rome, during their attendance at Pope Francis' funeral. /CNA
