Pope Francis passes away/ Around 400,000 people attended the funeral at the

At least 400,000 people gathered at the Vatican for Pope Francis' funeral and filled the streets of Rome to watch his coffin be carried to the church of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial, Italy's interior minister said on Saturday.

"We estimate no less than 400,000 people between those present in St. Peter's Square and those along the street," Matteo Piantedosi told the TG5 news program.

While the funeral will be held privately, the Vatican said Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the camerlegno who runs the Vatican's day-to-day affairs until a new Pope is elected, will mark Pope Francis' coffin with his seal, along with those of the Prefecture of the Papal Family, the Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff and the Liberian Chapter.

The Pope's funeral rite began at 1:00 p.m. local time (7:00 a.m. ET), in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who was tasked with preparing for Francis' funeral and who will soon help organize a conclave to choose Francis' successor.

The ceremony ended at 1:30 p.m.

Francis is the first pope in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican walls. In his will, the late pontiff requested that his tomb be inscribed with only the word: "Francis." /CNA
