Energy Security Summit/ Von der Leyen meets with British Prime Minister Starmer

The President of the European Commission has underlined the need for Europe to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels at an energy security summit jointly organised by the UK government and the International Energy Agency in London.

While supplies of liquefied natural gas from the US remain of strategic importance to the European Union, Ursula von der Leyen gave no sign that the EU executive planned to further increase imports, in a speech at a two-day summit on the future of energy security that opened in London on Thursday.

The Commission President noted how Russia had deliberately weaponized energy supplies, while the conflict in the Middle East threatened global maritime transport.

"And across the Atlantic, the threat of tariffs risks further disruption of essential supply chains," she added in a direct reference to the trade war.

Von der Leyen highlighted the progress that the EU, which lacks significant fossil fuel reserves, had already made in transitioning to clean energy, with renewables providing nearly half of the bloc's electricity and 78 gigawatts of new generation capacity installed last year alone./CNA
