Tributes to Pope Francis/ Thousands of people line up to pay their last respects

A long line of people continues to form in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. The growing crowd is waiting to see and pay their final respects to Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88. Pilgrims, students and the faithful from Rome and around the globe have gathered to pay their respects. The official procession to the basilica began shortly after 9 a.m. local time, when the doors opened to the public.

The coffin will remain in St. Peter's Basilica until his burial at 10 a.m. Saturday. The basilica will remain open on Wednesday and Thursday evenings until midnight to allow the faithful to pay their respects. The period of public mourning will end at 7 p.m. Friday.

According to unofficial estimates by the Italian security service in St. Peter's Square, about 100,000 people remained in the square after 5 p.m. Given the turnout, a Vatican press office official said, officials may leave the basilica's doors open past midnight.

Francis will be buried in the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. He will be the first pope to be buried outside the Vatican in more than a century.

The bells of St. Peter's were accompanied by a procession of 80 cardinals, bishops, pastors from about 50 parishes in Rome, close friends and relatives of Francis, priests and nuns residing in the Vatican, and Swiss guards. Six pontiffs walked along each side of the coffin. /CNA
