Powerful explosion at ammunition depot at Russian military base

A large explosion occurred on Tuesday evening at an ammunition depot at a Russian military base in the Kirzhach district of the Vladimir region, northeast of Moscow, regional governor Aleksandr Avdeyev said.

Four people were injured as a result of the ammunition explosion, which prompted authorities to issue an evacuation order, Avdeyev said.

He added that the ammunition caught fire and the shells exploded in the depot area.

Russia's Defense Ministry said earlier that the fire was caused by a violation of safety protocols and resulted in the explosion of ammunition stored in a warehouse.

"As a result of a fire on the territory of a military unit in the Vladimir region, ammunition stored in a warehouse exploded," the Defense Ministry said.

"The cause of the fire was a violation of safety standards when working with explosive materials... according to preliminary information," she said.

A state of emergency was declared in the Kirzhach region - which is located about 130 kilometers northeast of the Russian capital.

Personnel at the military base were evacuated along with about 450 other people from at least seven surrounding settlements, the governor said.

The ammunition depot is one of the largest in the Russian Armed Forces. It is located more than 500 kilometers from the border with Ukraine. There were no reports of drone strikes in the Vladimir region before the explosion at the depot.

Unverified videos, published earlier on Telegram channels, showed a large fire, a powerful explosion, and thick clouds of smoke rising into the sky.

A Telegram channel said there had been 10 to 11 explosions and that firefighters from neighboring regions had been called in to fight the blaze.

According to the channel, a special commission has been set up to investigate the cause of the fire./ REL
