Pope Francis' will revealed. In his will, Pope Francis gave instructions on what should be done after his death. He requested to be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore.

The Pope has requested that the tomb be in the ground, simple, without special decorations, and with only the inscription: Francis.

"As I feel the twilight approaching on my earthly life and with unwavering hope in eternal life, I wish to set forth my last wishes only regarding the place of my burial.

Throughout my life and during my ministry as a priest and bishop, I have always entrusted myself to the Mother of our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and for this reason I ask that my mortal remains rest, awaiting the Day of Judgment, in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

I wish that my last earthly journey will end precisely in this ancient Marian sanctuary, where I will always stop to pray at the beginning and end of each Apostolic Journey, entrusting my intentions to the Immaculate Mother and giving thanks for her tender and maternal care.

I request that my tomb be prepared in the burial niche in the side aisle between the Pauline Chapel (Chapel of Salus Populi Romani) and the Sforza Chapel of the Basilica, as shown on the attached plan. The tomb should be in the ground; simple, without special decorations, with only the inscription: Francis.

The expenses of the funeral arrangements will be covered by a sum given by a benefactor, which I have arranged to be transferred to the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major. I have given the necessary instructions in this regard to Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Liberian Basilica.
