Gun attack in Kashmir region kills 24 tourists

At least 24 people were killed in an armed attack in the picturesque Himalayan town of Pahalgam on Tuesday afternoon, with dozens more injured, some in critical condition, local media reported.

The attack took place in Baisaran, a mountaintop meadow three miles (5 km) from Pahalgam. Another spoke of the chaos as people started screaming and running after the first shots were fired. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Although Kashmir has long been the site of an armed insurgency against Indian rule, attacks on tourists have been rare.

The region's prime minister, Omar Abdullah, said Tuesday's attack was "far bigger than anything we have seen directed at civilians in recent years."/ CNA
