EU: Kosovo must form new institutions as soon as possible

The European Union said today that it is in Kosovo's interest to quickly form its institutions.

EU Enlargement Spokesperson Guillaume Mercier said on Thursday that the rapid formation of Kosovo's institutions is important for fulfilling European reforms and moving forward on this path.

"What I can say is that it is in Kosovo's interest to quickly form institutions, which is very important for the fulfillment of European reforms and for moving forward on this path. It is also important for other issues, such as the Growth Plan, as you know, the Kosovo Parliament must be constituted to continue the work in this direction," said Mercier, when asked whether the failure to constitute the Assembly has consequences for Kosovo's relations with the bloc.

Kosovo cannot receive the first payments from the Growth Plan until the Assembly ratifies the funds and the loan agreement with the European Union. International agreements are ratified by a two-thirds majority.

The Kosovo Assembly failed to convene for the fifth time on Wednesday, April 23.
MPs will meet again on Friday, April 25, in another attempt to vote for the Speaker of the Assembly./CNA
