Trump and Zelensky meet before Pope Francis' funeral at the Vatican

United States President Donald Trump met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, ahead of Pope Francis' state funeral at the Vatican on Saturday.

Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, said Trump and Zelensky "met privately today and had a very productive conversation." He added that more details about the meeting would be released later.

Zelensky's press secretary, Serhiy Nykyforov, also confirmed that the two presidents met in Rome before attending the funeral, and later said that they would not meet again at the Vatican due to their busy agendas.

"We hope to have results for everything we have discussed. The protection of the lives of our people. A complete and unconditional ceasefire. A credible and lasting peace that will prevent the outbreak of another war," Zelensky wrote on "X", in a separate post after the funeral ceremony.

"A very symbolic meeting that has the potential to become historic, if we achieve joint results," he added.

Trump and Zelensky also met with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during the funeral. Zelensky's office said the meeting between the four leaders "was positive."

The Ukrainian president's participation in the Pope's funeral was uncertain, but Zelensky was greeted with applause from the crowd as soon as he arrived in St. Peter's Square.

It was the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and Zelensky since their public clash in February at the White House. The meeting also came as Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Friday.

Trump said Friday after the Witkoff-Putin meeting that they are "very close" to an agreement to end the war in Ukraine and called on Zelensky to "close" this process.
