President Trump signs executive order on deep-sea mining

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order authorizing more deep-sea mining in US and international waters, a move by the US to compete with China, which is investing heavily in extracting minerals and important elements from the seabed.

The presidential order includes an expedited permitting process for deep-sea mining on the U.S. seabed. It also orders a review of permits in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

Deep-sea mining involves extracting manganese nodules from the ocean floor. These are rocks that contain precious metals such as nickel, cobalt and copper. These metals are used in the production of batteries for electric cars and are therefore of great value to a country's position in world trade.

White House aides say the initiative could see American operations collect more than a billion metric tons of deep-sea nodules and pump hundreds of billions of dollars into the American economy.

Commercial deep-sea mining remains in its early stages, but with a global race underway for rare earth minerals - and the industry dominated by China - Washington seems determined to expand its collection capacity to benefit its defense, advanced manufacturing and energy industries./CNA
