Sfidon Vu?i?: I will go to Moscow even if the EU does not want to

Defying calls to align Serbia with EU policy towards Russia, Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? said he will travel to Moscow for the Victory Day parade on May 9 and during the visit will discuss a new natural gas supply deal with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

In an interview with Pink TV, Vu?i? said he would most likely travel alone to Moscow for the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

"I don't want Djuro Macu's government to pay the price. I want him to have the opportunity to work properly with the European Union," Vu?i? declared.

The EU has repeatedly urged Serbia, which has been an EU candidate country since 2012, to align with the bloc's foreign policy. In its latest Enlargement Package report published in October, the European Commission said Serbia has yet to comply with any restrictive measures against Russia that the EU imposed following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Serbia has also maintained high-level relations with Russia, raising questions about its strategic direction, the Commission said.

Earlier this month, the EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Kaja Kallas, urged EU candidate countries not to participate in the Victory Day parade, amid the war in Ukraine.

"We made it very clear that we do not want any [EU] candidate country to participate in these events on May 9 in Moscow - that was very clear," Kallas said after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on April 14.

Vu?i? also told Pink TV that there will be a lot of work to do in Moscow.

"I need to talk to President Putin about the gas agreement. We need to sign it by May 30. We also need to resolve the NIS issue and discuss other things," Vu?i? said. /CNA
