US and Iran hold third round of talks in Oman

Iran and the United States met in Oman on April 26 for the third round of talks on Tehran's rapidly expanding nuclear program.

The fourth round is scheduled for May 3, while the venue is not yet known.

The talks lasted several hours in Muscat, Omani mediators said of the indirect sessions between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Steve Witkoff, the United States special envoy for the Middle East.

"The talks were conducted very seriously and professionally. We have cautious optimism," Araqchi said without providing further details.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who has mediated the previous two rounds of talks between the United States and Iran in Muscat and Rome, offered a positive assessment at the end of the talks.

Iran and the United States "identified a shared aspiration to reach an agreement based on mutual respect and lasting commitment," Busaidi posted on X after the talks in Oman concluded.

"The basic principles, objectives and technical concerns were addressed. Talks will continue next week with another high-level meeting scheduled for May 3," he added.

The goal of the talks is to achieve limits on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some severe economic sanctions that the United States has imposed on Tehran.

United States President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to carry out air strikes on Iran's nuclear program if a deal is not reached.

Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that they could develop a nuclear weapon from their stockpile of enriched uranium to near-weapons-grade levels./ REL
