End of the war in Ukraine / US may review energy sanctions on Russian gas

The White House is discussing whether to lift sanctions on the Russian Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline and potentially on other Russian assets in Europe, as part of discussions to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Lifting sanctions currently in place on one of Russia’s key pipelines connecting its natural gas fields to Western Europe would be a significant reversal of U.S. policy first established during President Donald Trump’s first term. President Joe Biden lifted those sanctions early in his term, but reinstated them after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The restart of Nord Stream 2 could provide Moscow with a financial windfall, but only if the EU were to agree to once again purchase Russian gas through the pipeline, a prospect that seems unlikely given the EU's campaign to divest itself of Russian energy imports.

White House special envoy Steve Witkoff has been a leading proponent of lifting sanctions. Witkoff, who has said he has developed a friendship with Putin in his role as Trump's envoy to Moscow, has instructed his team to compile a list of all energy sanctions the United States has imposed on Russia as part of this effort. /CNA
