EU technology rules/ Commission fines Apple $500 million

The EU executive announced it would fine the US iPhone maker €500 million over the way its App Store operates. It is the latest in a long series of attacks that EU regulators have made on the US firm in recent years and comes amid heightened transatlantic tensions following the decision to impose tariffs.

A series of decisions has led Apple to accuse the EU executive of unfairly targeting it.

"Despite countless meetings, the Commission continues to change objectives at every step of the way," Apple spokeswoman Emma Wilson said in a statement.

Last year, the Commission fined Apple €1.8 billion for the same conduct it penalized and, also last year, ordered the company to pay €13 billion in unpaid Irish taxes after a protracted court case.

The battle over Apple, a company worth nearly $4 trillion, has become a symbol of the clash between the US and the EU. The Digital Markets Act, under which the Commission imposed the fine, aims to limit the dominance of the largest technology firms./CNA
