Vatican meeting/ Catholic cardinals discuss choosing Pope's successor

Catholic cardinals gathered Monday for a conclave to elect a new leader for the world's 1.4 billion Catholics, following the death of Pope Francis. Dozens of cardinals from around the world have gathered at the Vatican since the 88-year-old Argentine pontiff died on April 21.

But so far there is little indication of who they might choose next.

"I believe that if Francis has been a Pope of surprises, this conclave will be one too, as it is not at all predictable," Spanish Cardinal Jose Cobo said in an interview.

In previous conclaves one can see where things can go, while this time many cardinals come from beyond Europe and have not even met each other before.

Francis was buried on Saturday with a funeral and burial ceremony that drew 400,000 people to St. Peter's Square and beyond, including kings, world leaders and ordinary pilgrims.

Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who was secretary of state under Francis, is for many people the favorite to succeed him.

British churchmen place him just ahead of Filipino Luis Antonio Tagle, the Metropolitan Archbishop emeritus of Manila, followed by Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana.

Next in their line of succession is Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, then Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea and Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna. /CNA
