The problems for the Louvre museum are endless / 9 people arrested for fraud

The problems and incidents at the Louvre Museum seem to have no end. Nine people have been arrested by French authorities on charges of ticket fraud at the Louvre Museum and the Palace of Versailles.

According to the Paris prosecutor's office, the financial losses to the Louvre from this fraud are estimated at over 10 million euros. Among those arrested are two museum employees, a tour guide and the person suspected of organizing the fraud ring.

The Louvre was in the spotlight in the fall for a spectacular theft that made global headlines. Meanwhile, as part of the ticket fraud investigation, 957,000 euros in cash and 486,000 euros from various bank accounts have so far been seized.

The suspects are reported to have invested some of their profits in real estate, both in France and Dubai.

The investigation began when museum management reported in December 2024 that two Chinese men were bringing groups of tourists into the museum, making sure to use the same tickets for different people multiple times. Other tour guides were later suspected of “similar practices,” according to the prosecutor’s office.

The museum's suspicions were confirmed by surveillance of the suspects, particularly regarding the reuse of tickets. Authorities also suspected that the perpetrators had accomplices inside the Louvre, who they used to evade ticket checks.

The prosecutor's office is investigating fraud by an organized gang, money laundering, active and passive corruption, providing assistance for irregular entry and stay in the country, and the use of forged certificates. /CNA
