Today is the fourth day of closing statements in the trial against former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi, former Speakers of Parliament Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, and former MP Rexhep Selimi at the Special Court in The Hague.

Selim's lawyer, Geoffrey Roberts, at the beginning of his speech, stated that the former MP is innocent and that the Specialized Prosecutor's Office (SPO) has failed to prove any of the crimes against him.

"Selim is completely innocent of all the crimes in the indictment. The SPO has simply failed to prove any of these alleged crimes. That is it and this is our position," the lawyer said.

He added, among other things, that the accused, along with other members of what the ZPS describes as a joint criminal enterprise, aimed to take control of Kosovo and remove opponents.

"The goal of taking control of Kosovo is not criminal in itself, but a way to end Milosevic's oppression. You have to find that there was a reconciliation for the alleged crimes. The issue of non-criminal objective, the Prosecution's theory is that this was the main goal of the accused and not the liberation of their people, but only the goal of selfishly seizing power ," Roberts said, according to REL.

The former KLA leaders are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, to which all four have pleaded not guilty. We also recall that the Hague Prosecutor's Office has requested 45 years in prison for each of the former KLA leaders. /CNA
