Attempts at state control/ Russia blocks messaging service on 'WhatsApp'

Russia has decided to block the messaging service on the WhatsApp communication application, which is also confirmed by the parent company Meta.

The move comes amid concerns that the Kremlin is seeking more state control over messaging apps, in an attempt to push users towards its state-sponsored communications app.

The company did not disclose further details on the extent to which the attempt was successful or what measures were taken to block the app.

 "Attempting to isolate over 100 million users from private and secure communication is a step backwards and can only lead to less safety for people in Russia. We continue to do everything we can to keep users connected," a WhatsApp spokesperson told The Guardian.

The move aligns with the Kremlin's goal of achieving a "sovereign internet," an online space cut off from Western technology and foreign influence and more vulnerable to state control./ CNA
