US House of Representatives votes to overturn tariffs on Canada

The US House of Representatives has voted to repeal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Canadian goods.

By a vote of 219 to 211, six Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in supporting a resolution seeking to end tariffs that Trump imposed on Canada last year.

The vote is largely symbolic as it will need to be approved by the US Senate and then by Trump, who is highly unlikely to sign it into law.

Since his re-election, Donald Trump has imposed a series of tariffs on Canada, most recently threatening a 100% import tax in response to Canada's proposed trade deal with China.

As the vote was taking place in the House of Representatives, Trump posted on Truth Social: "Any Republican, in the House or Senate, who votes against the tariffs will suffer serious consequences come election time."

"Tariffs have given us Economic and National Security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying that privilege," he added.

The vote came after U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Trump ally in Congress, tried unsuccessfully to block floor discussion by lawmakers on Trump's tariffs.

With Republicans holding a slim majority in the US House of Representatives, the departures of six Republicans along with a nearly united front from Democrats were enough to secure the votes./ CNA, translated by BBC
