"Mandelson-Epstein" scandal/ Another British government official

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's chief of staff, Sir Chris Wormald, has resigned. Wormald becomes the third senior official to leave the government in recent days, following the scandal that erupted over Peter Mandelson's links to Jeffrey Epstein.

"I am very grateful to Sir Chris for his long and distinguished career as a public servant, spanning over 35 years, and for the support he has given me over the past year. I have agreed with him that he will today resign from the position of Cabinet Secretary ," said Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Chris Wormald said his tenure had been an honour and a privilege, expressing his thanks to his former colleagues. After just one year in office, he was appointed in December 2024, making Wormald the shortest-serving chief secretary in Britain.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has come under pressure, even from within his own party, to resign over his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States. Files recently released by the US Department of Justice revealed Mandelson's close ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The revelations have led many to question Starmer's judgment, as the prime minister's popularity in the polls has been declining, just 18 months after he easily won Britain's general election. /CNA
