New measure against illegal immigration/ Meloni's government approves draft

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has declared that her government will use every means to guarantee the security of her country's borders, after approving a bill authorizing naval blockades to stop illegal migrant boats from reaching Italy.

This bill is the latest step in the crackdown on illegal immigration by Giorgia Meloni's far-right government.

Under the legislation, which must be approved by both houses of parliament, Italian authorities will have the power to ban ships from entering the country's territorial waters for up to 30 days, with the possibility of an extension of up to six months, in situations of serious threats to public order or national security, such as terrorism.

The measure, which comes after hundreds of people are suspected of dying while crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa during a recent powerful storm, also gives authorities the power to impose the blockade during periods of dramatic increases in ship arrivals.

Those who break the rules face fines of up to 50,000 euros and their vessels can be confiscated in case of repeated violations, a measure aimed at rescue ships. In such cases, passengers on board can be transported to countries other than their country of origin with which Italy has specific repatriation agreements.

The European Parliament this week approved changes to EU asylum rules in response to pressure from member states, including Italy, for a tougher approach. /CNA
