Russian attacks continue in Ukraine / Two people lose their lives, thousands of

Two people have been killed and nearly 2,600 apartment buildings in Kiev have been left without heat in the middle of winter by massive Russian overnight strikes in Ukraine.

In the eastern Ukrainian town of Lozova, which was attacked by Russian missiles and drones, a man and a woman were killed in their home and six others were injured.

"It was one of the scariest nights for our community since the beginning of the occupation by Russian forces in 2022 ," he said.

In Kiev, where overnight Russian strikes again targeted energy infrastructure, nearly 2,600 more buildings were left without heat in many neighborhoods, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, noting that two people were injured in the Ukrainian capital.

He noted that more than 1,100 apartment buildings, out of a total of 12,000 in Kiev, were already without heat after Russian strikes in recent weeks.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired a total of 24 missiles and 219 drones into Ukraine overnight. The strikes mainly targeted the city of Kiev, Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, Dnipro in central-eastern Ukraine and Odessa in the south of the country.

Moscow, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, has notably intensified its bombing of Ukraine's energy grid in recent months. The attacks have caused the country's worst energy crisis since the start of the war, with hundreds of thousands of households without heat and electricity amid temperatures sometimes below -20 degrees Celsius.

According to official data, energy infrastructure has been attacked more than 220 times since the start of the Russian invasion, including at least 10 massive attacks since October. /CNA
