French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that Europe will not surrender to bullies nor will it be intimidated, in a sharp criticism of US President Donald Trump's threat to impose high tariffs if Europe does not allow him to take Greenland.
While other European leaders have tried to maintain a measured tone to prevent the transatlantic dispute from escalating, Macron has come out calm.
Instead, he said, Europe will continue to defend territorial sovereignty and the rule of law, despite what he called a shift toward a world without rules. That could include the EU responding with its own tough trade sanctions.
"We prefer respect to bullies. And we prefer the rule of law to brutality," Macron said.
Macron wore aviator sunglasses during his speech, which the Elysee Palace said were to protect his eyes due to a burst blood vessel.
