Power outages in Spain and Portugal / Governments begin emergency cabinet

A power outage hit Spain and Portugal today, leaving millions of people without electricity and causing disruptions to the metro network, telephone lines, traffic lights and ATMs.

The Portuguese cabinet called an emergency meeting at the prime minister's residence. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Red Eléctrica, the corporation that operates the national electricity grid, to follow up on efforts to restore power to the grid.

The countries have a combined population of more than 50 million. It was not immediately clear how many were affected. It is rare to have such a widespread outage across the Iberian Peninsula.

Citizens have been asked not to call 112 except in a true emergency to avoid overloading the lines.

The European Commission issued a statement on Monday saying it was in contact with the national authorities of Spain and Portugal, as well as the European network of electricity transmission system operators ENTSO-E to understand the root cause and impact of the situation.

"In accordance with applicable EU legislation, there are protocols in place to restore the functioning of the system," the statement said.

Spain's traffic department is asking citizens to avoid using their cars as much as possible due to a power outage, which has affected traffic lights and electrical road signs.

Portuguese police deployed more officers to direct traffic and deal with the growing demand for help, including from people trapped in elevators. The country's hospitals and other emergency services switched to generators./CNA
