Merz: German military could help clear the Strait of Hormuz of mines

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that the armed forces of the Bundeswehr (German army) could be deployed to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz once the war in Iran is over.

"We can do this. If we are asked to. and this happens within the framework of a real collective security mandate, which is the United Nations, NATO, the European Union - with a resolution from the Bundestag, this is an option," Merz said at an event in Frankfurt yesterday evening.

He added that the proposal exists for now only in theory, as Iran has not yet laid mines in the waterway between Iran and Oman, through which a fifth of the world's oil supply moved, before the conflict began.

US President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or reach a deal to end the war until April 6 before the US launches attacks on Iranian power plants. /CNA
