Another European country moves towards banning social media for under-14s

Austria is planning to ban the use of social networks for children under 14, becoming one of the countries following a global trend of reviewing digital access for minors.

The government has announced plans to ban children under 14 from using platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat or X. 

The draft is expected to be prepared by the end of June 2026, but will need parliamentary approval to become law.

The government says it aims to protect the mental health and well-being of children by keeping them away from algorithms that can create addiction, harmful content, risks such as acts of harassment, sexual abuse or unnecessary exposure.

Deputy Prime Minister Andreas Babler said that the government cannot stand by and watch as these platforms make children addicted and often sick.

The proposal includes the use of modern technical methods for age verification, which aim to be secure and respect users' privacy.

Clarification of the implementation details and the date when it will begin is still under discussion./CNA
