Maduro trial/ Prosecutors: 'He looted' Venezuela's wealth

A US court is reviewing a request by former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores to be allowed to use Venezuelan government funds to pay for their defense costs in a legal case filed in the US.

The couple's lawyers argued that US sanctions prevented them from using these funds, while prosecutors stated that Maduro and Flores had "plundered the country's wealth" and should not use the money for legal defense.

Judge Alvin Hellerstein stressed that the right to due process is paramount and that he would not dismiss the case because of the funding dispute. He is expected to issue his ruling at a later date.

Maduro and Flores were brought to New York on January 3, following a raid by US forces in Caracas, to face charges of narcoterrorism and weapons possession, which they deny. The couple has not yet sought bail and are being held at the Metropolitan Federal Detention Center in Brooklyn.

The court's decision will determine whether the Venezuelan government can financially support the defense of former leaders, an issue that also involves diplomatic tensions between the US and Venezuela./ CNA
