Former Venezuelan President Maduro appears in court in New York

Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro arrived at the Manhattan courthouse in New York on Thursday.

US media reports that a judge is expected to consider his request to use Venezuelan funds to pay his lawyer or to dismiss his narcoterrorism case.

The hearing will be the first for Maduro and his wife and co-defendant, Cilia Flores, since their first appearance in January following their shocking capture in Caracas by US special forces, in which at least 100 people are said to have been killed.

Federal prosecutors allege that Maduro and his wife engaged in a narcoterrorism conspiracy, conspiring to import thousands of tons of cocaine into the U.S. over a decade to fund illegal government activities. /CNA
