EP tightens migration policies, approves sending rejected migrants outside EU

The European Parliament has given the green light to a new legal package aimed at strengthening return policies for undocumented migrants, including the possibility of transferring them to centers outside the territory of the European Union.

This decision will give Member State authorities greater powers to detain people who do not have the right to stay, for up to two years. It also paves the way for the establishment of special structures in third countries, where rejected migrants will remain until repatriation.

European institutions argue that the measure aims to increase the effectiveness of returns, as currently a large part of deportation decisions are not implemented. Meanwhile, the law also provides for punitive measures for those who obstruct the procedures, as well as stronger rules for preventing return to the EU.

However, the decision has met with strong opposition from humanitarian organizations, including the International Rescue Committee, which warn that this approach could jeopardize the fundamental rights of migrants and create problematic practices outside the EU's direct control.

The vote in Parliament reflects a trend towards tougher immigration policies, at a time when the issue remains one of the main challenges for European countries./ CNA
