Strait of Hormuz in crisis/ Iran blockade shakes global oil markets

The Strait of Hormuz has been virtually closed for nearly four weeks, causing chaos in global energy markets and significantly increasing tensions in the Middle East.

Iran's attacks and threats against merchant ships in the Persian Gulf have brought maritime traffic to a near standstill. This waterway is vital to the global economy, carrying about 20% of the world's oil and natural gas supplies.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has emphasized diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis, but in parallel has ordered the deployment of thousands of additional troops to the region and is considering the possibility of the US Navy escorting tankers.

Experts point out that Iran's geographical position gives it a strategic advantage. The strait is very narrow and traffic passes through limited corridors, making it difficult for ships to maneuver and defend. In addition, Iran's long coastline and mountainous terrain make it easy to hide and use weapons such as anti-ship missiles, drones and naval mines.

Iran is also suspected of taking economic advantage of the situation, imposing fees for the safe passage of some ships. Reports indicate that some tankers have paid large sums to pass through the strait.

So far, at least 19 attacks on ships have been reported in the region, while hundreds more remain stranded. Even if the situation calms down, experts warn that it will take time for maritime traffic to fully return.

Meanwhile, the United States and its allies, including the United Kingdom and France, are working on joint plans to ensure freedom of navigation in this key point of world trade.

The crisis remains without a clear solution, while the risk of further escalation remains high./ CNA
