EP vote on migrant return centers/ Meloni: Europe is finally going in the right

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reacted to today's vote by MEPs who approved tightening the European Union's migration policy, specifically mentioning return centers.

In her post on social media, Meloni states that Europe is already moving in the right direction, a path that, according to her, Italy has strongly supported.

"The European Parliament has given the green light to new rules on returns: Europe is finally moving in the right direction, on a path that Italy has strongly supported. Return centres increase the chances of finding a place of return for irregular migrants, including not only countries of origin, but also third countries. This is an important step towards making returns more effective, strengthening border control and providing a migration policy for Europe that is finally more credible ," Meloni's post reads.

The European Parliament today approved a law aimed at accelerating the deportation of illegal immigrants to "return centers" outside the European Union.

MEPs in Brussels voted 389 to 206 in favour of reforms that pave the way for the creation of migrant centres across the bloc's borders to house migrants whose asylum claims are rejected. Under the proposals, those who refuse to be relocated to return centres would face harsh penalties.

The law enables EU countries to return irregular migrants to third countries unrelated to their origin, as long as they have bilateral agreements with a non-EU country to build so-called "return centres" on its territory. /CNA
