According to data published today by Eurostat, in 2024 around 1.2 million people acquired citizenship of a member state of the European Union. This marks an 11.6% increase compared to 2023.

Meanwhile, this figure represents an increase of 54.5% from 2014.

The countries that granted the most citizenship were:

Germany – 288,700 people,

Spain – 252,500 people

Italy – 217,400 people.

More than 88% of these citizenships were granted to persons who were not EU citizens, while around 10.6% were granted to persons who were already citizens of another EU country.

Of the EU countries, Sweden recorded the highest naturalization rate in 2024, with 7.5 citizenships granted for every 100 non-EU residents. /CNA
