Illegal immigration/ Poland to extend border controls with Germany and Lithuania

Poland's Interior Ministry said it will extend checks along its borders with European Union member states Germany and Lithuania until October 1.

The country began temporary controls in July, echoing several other EU governments, to help curb illegal immigration.

"This decision is due to the need to combat illegal immigration and ensure internal security," the ministry said in a post on "X".

Germany introduced temporary controls on some eastern and southern borders in 2023. The German government cited high levels of irregular migration and migrant smuggling when it announced the controls along the border with Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

A year later, controls were expanded to its western and northern borders towards France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark. /CNA
