Burnham confirms: I will run for Starmer's seat

Andy Burnham has reacted to Keir Starmer's resignation and confirms he will try to replace him as prime minister.

"Keir has given extraordinary service to our country and I want to thank him for his leadership and dedication during such a challenging period.

His decision marks the beginning of a transition and it is important that this process is carried out in an orderly and responsible manner. I will present myself as part of this process.

The country expects stability, seriousness, and a continued focus on the issues that matter most, and that is what it will receive. As we move forward, our priority must be to work together to bring the country back to where we all want it to be.

People want to see progress in economic growth, the cost of living, public services, housing, and opportunities for the next generation. Political change should never distract from the responsibility to improve people's lives.

The Labour movement has always been at its strongest when it looks forward with confidence and purpose.

"This is what we will do from now on and we will make sure that this transition is a positive process of renewal for our party and our country," Burnham said.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, after resigning, announced that the process to elect a new leader of the Labour Party will begin on July 9.

Starmer stated that he has asked the party's National Executive Committee to open nominations for the new leader on that date and complete the process before Parliament's summer recess, which begins on July 16./ CNA
