Largest cocaine seizure in Australian history, police discover tons of drugs in

Australian police have made the largest cocaine seizure in the country's history, confiscating 2.7 tonnes of the drug hidden in a system of underground bunkers west of Sydney.

Authorities said the cocaine was discovered on Friday in secret compartments built under false floors in three shipping containers located at a property in the Londonderry area. The street value of the drugs is estimated to be around 816 million Australian dollars, or around 500 million euros.

Two men, aged 21 and 25, were arrested during the operation, allegedly attempting to evade police. They have been charged with possession of a commercial quantity of an illegally imported drug and face life imprisonment if convicted.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the cocaine was smuggled into Australia through the Midge Point area in North Queensland, on the orders of an organised crime group.

The operation, codenamed "Minjiang," began in May after authorities discovered 40 kilograms of cocaine floating near a boat ramp at Midge Point. Police have also arrested and charged six other people in Queensland and New South Wales as part of the investigation.

Authorities have also detained a ship suspected of being part of a smuggling ring in the Solomon Islands, while investigations into the origin of the drugs and other people involved continue.

Australian Federal Police Commander Stephen Jay said the case demonstrates the high level of organization of international criminal networks and their willingness to use sophisticated methods to secure large profits from drug trafficking.

Australia is considered one of the most profitable markets for cocaine, due to its high selling prices, while international reports show that Australia and New Zealand have among the highest levels of cocaine consumption in the world./ CNA
