Vance: Trump seeks 'new page' in US-Iran relations

US Vice President JD Vance said today that US President Donald Trump had called for a "new page" to reform US relations with Iran.

Vance's statement comes as the senior official arrived in Switzerland to lead the US delegation at the direct talks between the two countries.

"This is a historic meeting. What the president has asked us to do is turn a new page in transforming our relationship with the Iranian people and to speak to the Iranians to say that if their leaders are prepared to relinquish their role as a destabilizing factor in the region, if they are prepared to abandon forever any ambition to acquire a nuclear weapon, then the United States is prepared to fundamentally transform our relationship with that country," Vance declared.

After bilateral talks in the morning between the American and Iranian delegations and mediators from Qatar, Pakistan and Swiss diplomats, the four delegations gathered around a table in the early afternoon for direct talks.

These talks must be concluded within 60 days, resulting in a final agreement. /CNA
